Every year the Hope Lutheran Church Women sponsor a school supply drive to aid local schools in providing their students with the basics.  This year we are asking for your financial support!  We have discovered that we have more purchasing power when buying items in bulk.  For example, a good quality backpack can cost up to $50 but we found a source where we can get the same backpack for $10-$15 when buying in bulk.  Additionally, we can buy the exact quantities and items that we need, and will save the time spent inventorying donated items.

To donate, you may write a check payable to Hope Lutheran Church and designate it for school supplies.  Alternatively, donate right here online!  Please remember to designate any donations for school supplies.

The youth hostels are located within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia synod.  These hostels provide food, housing, basic healthcare and supervision for 1650 children between the ages of 5 and 15 in locations near public schools.  The children, often from rural areas and/or orphaned due to HIV/AIDS are already vulnerable.  Without these hostels they risk losing access to an education as well.

Currently, most of the hostel program funds go to providing food to the children.  The goal of the Fill the Container drive is to to help provide for some of the children’s other needs.  We are collecting gently used clothing and shoes, children’s books, school supplies, health kits, blankets and toys, to be shipped in July.

Items may be dropped off at Hope Lutheran Church between June 23 and July 10.  You may also donate financially.  Checks may be made out to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and mailed or dropped off at Hope.

Please consider donating any of the items listed below:

Clothing -

    Gently used and washed items for both boys and girls

    Shoes – gently used sneakers or sandals, new flip flops

    Ball caps – these are very popular among the children

    Hair accessories

Children’s books in English – Currently only 2 of the 19 youth hostels have a collection of books for the children to use.

     Picture books, easy readers or chapter books in good condition, non-fiction resources written within the last 10 years, children’s Bibles

School Supplies

     Paper, notebooks. pencils, markers, construction paper

Health Kits – new items only

     Bars of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, band aides

Toys (no battery operated items please)

     Deflated soccer balls, air pump, jump ropes, cars, dolls, Nerf toys, stuffed animals

Miscellaneous items

     Blankets, twin bedding, fabric (at least 1.5 yd length, to be used to make bedding and clothing)

Any excess items will be donated to Serve, Prince William County’s homeless shelter.
